Community Manager Appreciation Day

This past Monday (Jan 24) was the first ever Community Manager Appreciation Day.

It’s such a great idea!  Not sure why it’s taken so long for an actual day to be proposed.   But now it has and lots of thanks to Jeremiah Owyang’s post on the idea.

If you missed Jeremiah’s post,  Community Manager Appreciation Day will be held on the 4th Monday of January each year.   #CMAD is the hashtag.

He recommends you take time out and appreciate the following (of course use #CMAD):

  • the community person who helped to solve your customer problem
  • a coworker (and make sure their boss knows too)
  • yourself!  (for all you community managers out there!)

Even though it’s now 2 days late, I’d still encourage you to share the community love & get to thanking people!

to delete or not to delete

deletion has been a topic of late on the list. what do you do with old abandoned threads/conversations? are they archived or deleted? & is that a ‘hard’ delete?

what other items might be deleted? what about communication between 2 members of the community?

what is your policy?

Raise awareness about bullying

In the States, October 4-10th is National Bullying Prevention Awareness week and they have a site: Stomp Out Bullying. As part of the week, there is Blue Shirt Day on October 5th to help raise awareness.

According stats on their website, 1 out of 4 kids is bullied and 1 out of 5 admit to being a bully or exhibiting bullying behaviour. For cyberbullying, 1 out of 4 have been bullied online more than one time. 58% of the kids do not tell their parents or other adult when something mean or hurtful has happened online.

In Australia, the Communications & Media Authority launched Let’s Fight It Together. The 7 minute video and teachers guide is designed to give teens strategies to avoid and help others dealing with cyberbullying. They quote research saying an average of 7-10% of students in years 4-9 have been cyber bullied.

Also out of AU, interesting research this week from a QUT researcher who says cyber bullying has contributed to increasing numbers of crime by girls. Professor Kerry Carrington notes there needs to be programs which address this increase and acknowledgment that girls can be violent. article here.

What is happening in other countries to bring light to the issue?

July conversations: b2b, how x year olds use media & breaking guitars

what we’ve been talking about on e-mint this month:

the question has been asked… how many of us work in a B2B context? most communities are thought of being B2C but are they? would e-mint, a community of community people, be considered B2C or B2B?

making the rounds recently is a report written by a 15 year old who was doing work experience at Morgan Stanley. his ‘how teenagers consume media‘ dismisses twitter, calls newspapers irrelevant, says they love phones and won’t pay for music. is any of this totally surprising?

the report doesn’t mention how many teenagers were consulted for this ‘research’ or their demographic/psychographic info, so it’s interesting to read a follow-up by a 17 year old work experience student. and finally, let’s not forget our very own Dan Wilson’s ‘how 31 year olds consume media‘!

we’ve also been talking about dave carroll’s ‘united breaks guitars’ video. an update (from july 24) says the 2nd of 3 promised songs will be online soon. United has offered repair costs, travel vouchers and says they want to use Dave’s video in training videos.

May conversations – twitter, outsourcing, removing content

Time has flown past since my last past so will have to do a monthly conversation wrap-up this time!

On the list we’ve been talking about twitter & kids (and the lack of information Twitter provides in regards to safety),  can you outsource your moderation to India?,  and what’s the best practice when you remove a comment/thread (do you leave a notice behind?  do you alert the people involved? etc).

and we’re enjoying troll slayer on xkcd
